Title: Battery Storage in Local Authority Renewable Energy Projects
Date: Wednesday 26 October 2022
Time: 10:00 – 11:00am
Speakers: Steve Gummer, Steve Cirell, Radhika Devesher, Ben Wallace and Ashleigh Boyce
Until battery storage came along, the issue of balancing the grid and coping with ever more intermittent renewable energy on the system was particularly challenging. However, battery storage allows for ’time shifting’ whereby power generated at times of low demand can be stored and then discharged into the grid when demand is higher. This is helpful to both consumers and those developing renewable energy assets.
Battery storage assets can be stand alone, but the example used in the latest paper is a local authority solar farm that adds battery storage to make the asset more flexible and also to improve the business case.
The webinar will look at battery storage and how it can be developed and better used in local government.

Steve GummerSteve G is a Partner at Sharpe Pritchard and has worked on renewable energy projects from carbon credits, emissions trading, renewable generation, electric vehicles and transmission and all of the legal issues that accompany. He is an expert in public law and matters of subsidy control and private financing for public projects.
Steve CirellSteve C has worked in house in the public sector (latterly in a senior position), was an equity partner and in charge of local government work with an international law firm for 20 years and has written 18 books on various aspects of public law. He has advised across renewable projects mainly for local and public authorities.
Radhika DevesherRadhika is a Senior Associate at Sharpe Pritchard specialising in contracts and procurement. She has over 10 years’ experience working in-house with a local authority, therefore has a thorough understanding of challenges being faced in-house. She now advises central and local authority and “blue light” clients across a range of sectors including major infrastructure projects, waste, academies and leisure. She has a keen interest in making the legal world a “greener” place by ensuring green considerations are covered in all client projects where possible.
Ben Wallace
Head of Development, AMP Clean EnergyBen has been developing low carbon energy schemes for over 15 years. His experience spans consultancy and working in-house for Lightsource BP, the Irish utility ESB and now as Head of Development at AMP Clean Energy.Having worked on more than 70 projects with a capacity more than 1,500MW, Ben’s industry knowledge and experience includes natural gas generation, wind, solar, nuclear and biomass power projects. Ben is now focused on energy storage, in particular AMP Clean Energy’s new flexible energy generation business, Battery Box.
Ashleigh Boyce
Development Manager at AMP Clean EnergyAshleigh joined AMP Clean Energy in 2020 after graduating with a first-class Masters in Earth Science from Durham University. Ashleigh has successfully led the development of several flexible energy generation projects across the UK including distributed gas peaking plants and larger 11kV connected energy storage projects. She is now leading on the development of AMP Clean Energy’s new Battery Box business, a smart solution which stores renewable energy when it is sunny and windy and exports it back to the electricity network when it is not.
