Green Goals – Infrastructure

The development of infrastructure is a critical part of meeting the UK’s net zero commitments. We have been involved across the range of exciting “green” infrastructure projects including:

• Major water resilience and flood resilience schemes
• Renewable generation (power) in the form of wind (offshore and onshore), nuclear, solar, tidal and energy from waste (EfW)
• Renewable heating projects from air and ground source heat pumps
• Renewable transmission assets (heat and power)
• Hydrogen projects; and
• Electric vehicles, hydrogen powered vehicles and refueller assets

Such infrastructure projects come with a huge range of challenges for public and private providers, and we advise on the essential considerations such as developing appropriate commercial terms, vires, planning and permitting, property, construction risk allocation, subsidy control, procurement, regulation, creating investable risk allocations to attract private finance and enabling use of government grants.

We have seen an increase in public sector authorities who are looking to set up infrastructure projects and play a key role in ensuring that the relevant rules and applicable regulations have been accounted for.

Some believe that infrastructure development is outside the “business as usual” portfolio for the public sector, however we have noted that many of our clients are embracing the opportunity to respond to the nation’s green agenda, whilst also optimising their project ideas to provide the best returns, revenues and environmental outcomes for their authority.
