UK Research and Innovation, DRIVE35 Scale-Up Grants Scheme

This UK Research and Innovation, DRIVE35 Scale-Up Grants scheme provides grant funding to help bridge the gap between research and development (R&D) to mass production for near-commercial pilots for zero-emission vehicle technology.

Funding of up to £500 is committed as part of DRIVE35 for automotive R&D and up to £150 of that funding will be allocated to Scale-Up Grants.

Our key takeaways from the Subsidy Advice Unit (SAU) report are:

• Assessments should detail what alternative fundings options (e.g. equity funding) were considered and why they were not appropriate.
• The relevant product market (i.e. those which the beneficiary would likely operate in) should be discussed, especially in relation to potential competition issues.
• Only benefits relating to the specific policy objectives should be considered in the balancing exercise. Work should also be undertaken to identify examples of how the Scheme may impact international trade and investment.
• These should explain how assessments of the proportionality of each individual grant amount will be made.
