The UK Research and Innovation, Automotive Innovation Grants is proposed grant funding of roughly £375m for research and development in the automotive sector for the transition to zero-emission vehicles.
It will help UK-registered businesses in this sector and each applicant will be able to apply for between £500,000 – £1.5m per project (or £25m for consortiums).
It will form part of the new automative sector funding offer which includes the proposed Automotive Innovation Grants scheme.
Our key takeaways from the Subsidy Advice Unit (SAU) report are:
- Assessment should explain how not implementing the scheme would affect the research and development investment decisions of potential beneficiaries. It should also explain how they can invest at levels necessary to achieve the policy objective.
- Detail should be provided on the alternative funding options and why these were not deemed appropriate to achieve the policy objective. This should include explaining why any particular loans will not be suitable for certain applicants.
- Assessments should identify the main products which will be impacted by the scheme and what market impacts there may be. Other negative impacts, such as those to different geographical or trade areas, should also be detailed. This report recommends that evidence, such a data and case studies from funding allocations in previous years, should be used to identify markets most likely to be affected by any distortive effects.
- Thorough explanation should be provided as to why the Energy and Environment Principles are applicable to the scheme, in relation to the specific policy objective and how the scheme is compliant with these.
