Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), National Theatre

  • DCMS intends to award the National Theatre with a grant of £26,159,635 in a two-year programme of infrastructure works to carry out a series of repairs on its London South Bank estate. The grant will be administered and monitored by the Arts Council England.
  • Our key takeaways are that Subsidy Advice Unit (SAU) reports should:
    • clearly link any maintenance works (which the subsidy will facilitate) to the delivery of the stated equity objective;
    • explain what the ‘no subsidy’ scenario is against which the Subsidy should be assessed (for example what works could or could not be done without the subsidy) and the impacts of such for the delivery of the policy objectives;
    • outline how existing cash reserves will be prioritised in the absence of the subsidy to ensure the viability of the estate;
    • explain why further fundraising, for example philanthropy if applicable, could not be sought for the works; and
    • have a consistent approach to key impacts throughout to ensure there is no contradictions or confusion in the information provided.
