In alignment with Clean Air Day, Sharpe Pritchard, a leading public law firm renowned for its work in sustainable infrastructure, is showcasing its comprehensive efforts to promote environmental sustainability and reduce air pollution.
This commitment is deeply engrained in the firm’s operational strategies and client advisory services, particularly in regulated energy and water sectors.
Sharpe Pritchard has implemented several key initiatives to ensure its operations are environmentally conscious and aligned with its commitment to sustainability:
- Supplier audit and sustainable supply chain: The firm has conducted thorough audits to ensure suppliers’ values align with its own sustainability goals, resulting in updates to its supply chain.
- The installation of Green walls: The firm has installed green walls throughout its office to improve air quality and promote a healthier, more sustainable work environment.
- Electric delivery and transport schemes: All office supplies are now delivered via electric vehicles. Additionally, the firm offers a cycle scheme for all staff, complete with secure bicycle storage, and an electric vehicle scheme in conjunction with Octopus Energy.
- 100% Rego Electric: The firm operates from a fully electric building powered entirely by renewable energy sources, further reducing its environmental impact.
- Remote meetings and low carbon travel: Where possible, meetings are held remotely. For necessary travel, employees are encouraged to use trains and other low-carbon transport options.
- Reforestation efforts: For necessary printing, Sharpe Pritchard plants a new tree for every tree’s worth of paper consumed, in partnership with Printrelief.
Led by COO Nadia Biles Davies, the firm has successfully eliminated scope 1 and 2 emissions, operating exclusively on renewable electricity and eliminating single-use plastics from their offices. These efforts have dramatically reduced their carbon footprint to just 269.6 tCO2e per year, significantly below the national average for law firms.
Meanwhile, under the guidance of Alastair Lewis, a specialist in planning and environmental law, the firm continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring that nationally significant infrastructure projects comply with the relevant legislation and policy, promoting sustainable development and clean air for local communities. Currently the firm is advising on a number of nationally significant infrastructure development consent orders (DCOs).
Speaking about Clean Air Day, Nadia, said: “Our proactive approach to Clean Air Day and ongoing sustainability efforts not only highlight our role as a leader in environmental stewardship within the legal sector but also reinforce our commitment to supporting the community and the planet.
“We see firsthand the impact that air pollution has on our team, their families and our clients, so we want to be a part of the change taking place in the UK and throughout the world.”
