Gareth Oldale

Partner, Head of Technology and Data

Gareth is the head of technology and data law at Sharpe Pritchard.  He advises clients on major projects predominantly in technology, media and telecommunications and spends much of his time advising on IT and business process outsourcing projects and all aspects of procurement in the public and private sectors.

He is regularly instructed to advise on information law, data protection and privacy issues, cloud computing, internet law, e-commerce, broadband, wi-fi and networking, IP and software licensing, hosting and data centre issues, freedom of information and state aid matters.  Gareth is experienced in advising clients on the development, use and procurement of new technologies.

Gareth has a keen interest in advising clients which operate at the interface between the private and public sectors.  He acts for a broad range of clients including central government departments, non-departmental public bodies, emergency services, local government, and technology and telecoms organisations in the private and third sectors, including the corporate sector.

In addition to technology and data law, Gareth advises on PPP and PFI projects and is frequently instructed to draft and review commercial contracts. He also advises on business strategy issues and particularly enjoys supporting corporate clients as their businesses grow.

He was a member of the European Commission's working group on innovation, reporting to the commission’s high level group on business services (see here for a copy of the final report).

Gareth provides bespoke training seminars on various technology, data and procurement topics.

He also provides pro bono advice on commercial law, technology, data protection and privacy matters to a small charity based in Oxford.

Gareth is a member of the Society for Computers and Law.

What others say

Gareth has been one of the main drivers in delivering the project, not just from providing legal advice but encompassing the many varied and complex issues and understanding the bigger picture.  Gareth's attitude has always been positive with the ‘can do approach’ - I know Gareth has worked many late and long hours to achieve the deadlines imposed and has never blanched at the prospect of unexpected workloads.  Above all though, we have appreciated Gareth's calm manner and sense of humour throughout the time he has been on the project. Personally, and I know I speak for others, Gareth has been a pleasure to work with.

I would have hoped to have the opportunity to visit in person and say thanks for your immense contribution to a successful procurement.  The doom goblins were adamant that we would stumble and fall, and with your invaluable assistance we proved them wrong.  It has been an unmitigated pleasure to work with you.

I have to say without (Gareth’s) personal efforts we would not have been in a position to sign off this vitally important piece of work.  I have been a manager for many years with the Council and I can honestly say he is one of the best advisors I have worked with.  In addition to being extremely competent and professional, he is well very liked and respected by the team, senior manager and also our new suppliers.
