Sharpe Pritchard’s Steve Gummer has been named the UK’s top environmental and sustainability champion. He took the opportunity to urge radical public sector action on the climate crisis.
Sharpe Pritchard, a leader in public law, is celebrating a major achievement as Steve Gummer, Partner and Head of Net Zero, has been named Environmental/Sustainability Champion of the Year at the National Legal 500 ESG Awards.
Speaking at the awards ceremony held at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, Steve highlighted the urgent need for action: “The climate crisis is at tipping point – incremental progress isn’t enough. The public sector isn’t just part of the solution; it’s leading it.”
Sharpe Pritchard’s leadership includes delivering groundbreaking projects:
- First new reservoir in South East England since the 1970s
- Supporting Ofgem’s pioneering CCUS transport and storage rollout
- Advising Ofwat on innovative sustainable water initiatives
- Delivering local government battery storage and solar projects
- Driving biodiversity net gain strategies
- Rolling out first-of-a-kind heat networks
Steve also leads the GreenSteves initiative, combining podcasts, presentations, and free advice to simplify and promote local authority energy projects, empowering councils to achieve Net Zero.
It has provided hours of free legal advice to Councils on how to deliver net zero. Steve wants Councils to keep using this. “If you want to deliver something radical, we will be behind you all the way. There is no such thing as can’t. We have to.”
Internally, Sharpe Pritchard has eliminated all scope 1 and 2 emissions, reducing its carbon footprint to just 14 tCO2e per year – among the lowest in the legal sector.
Steve added, “We practice what we preach. If we’re not fighting for our planet, what’s the point?”
The award follows Sharpe Pritchard’s shortlisting for the Sustainability Award at the Lexis Nexis Legal Awards 2025, further establishing its leadership in ESG and public sector renewables.
For public bodies ready to push sustainability forward, Sharpe Pritchard is here to support transformative action.
