IT & Information Law

IT and information law have never been so important.  As technologies continue to develop and innovation creates new products and solutions, our clients need to be able to rely upon a legal team with specialist IT and information law expertise, which is up to date with the latest developments in both the legal sector and in industry.

Our team has experience of advising a wide range of clients on a vast array of IT, telecommunications and technology matters.  We regularly work with public sector clients on PFI/PPP projects, outsourcing, IT contracts & procurement, broadband/wi-fi and other networking matters, software licensing, intellectual property rights protection & enforcement, hosting and e-commerce issues.  We are experienced at drafting and negotiating a full range of legal documents involved in the development, use, exploitation and procurement of new and innovative technologies.  We are also frequently instructed to advise upon and tailor the OGC model ICT terms and similar contracts, including those used by pan-Government IT frameworks.

The information law sector is also evolving more quickly now than ever before, with data and privacy issues becoming increasingly prevalent.  Our team includes experts who are able to advise upon data protection, privacy, freedom of information, online communications, web accessibility and regulatory matters.

The continued increase in the use of software as a service, cloud computing and utility-based IT solutions, together with developments in new media, content rights management and a host of other technological advancements, mean that IT law is rapidly developing.  In terms of information law, recent developments including the introduction of new requirements for consent to the use of cookies, the use of fines of up to £500,000 for data protection and privacy breaches, the implementation of the Digital Economy Act and the heightened reputational risk following numerous high-profile cases resulting from freedom of information requests all demonstrate that getting sound legal advice in this highly regulated environment is essential.

Our dedicated IT and information law team works with clients to ensure that they are best able to reap the benefits of technological advancements whilst ensuring legal compliance and minimising risk.

Recent work includes:

  • Advising a central Government department on the procurement of a critical financial data management system for pan-central Government accounting and financial reporting
  • Advising a central Government department on the procurement of a £multi-million replacement ICT system and outsourced support function
  • Acting for a consortium of 8 police authorities procuring a £multi-million high profile data management system for use throughout the UK
